It was late the following afternoon by the time Jim pulled up outside his apartment. He’d slept for twelve solid hours at his parents’ house and yet he still felt tired. As he yanked his case out of the boot, he contemplated going for a run. It would probably do him good. He’d spent most of the day either sitting next to his father at the hospital or driving back down.

He was tossing up which route to run when he became aware of someone walking up behind him.

‘Just come back from your trip?’

Slowly he turned. There had been a time when that soft, husky voice had lifted his heart. Now it sunk to his boots. ‘Ten out of ten for observation,’ he replied coolly, halting on the pavement outside his building. The last thing he wanted was for Barbara to follow him inside. ‘What are you doing here?’

‘So curt.’ She shook her head, the shiny brown hair he’d once loved to run his fingers through dancing over her shoulders. ‘Can’t we at least be civil to one another?’

‘I’ll be civil in the office,’ he replied bluntly. ‘Out here I can do as I like. So, what do you want?’

She pursed her lips. ‘Okay, we’ll play it your way. I was sorting out my house and I found some of your things.’ She looked down at the brown carrier bag she was holding.

‘My things?’ He stared at her, stunned. ‘God, Barbara, it’s been two years. Why are you only bringing them round now?’

‘Yes, well, I don’t clear out very often. Here, take them.’

He took hold of the bag and looked inside. A shaver, spare pair of jeans, T-shirt and a few boxers. Things he’d left at hers for those occasions he’d found himself staying over without planning to. It seemed like a lifetime ago. Wearily he shoved the bag back at her. ‘I don’t want them. Keep them for the next man who decides to stay over. He might be grateful for them.’

Reluctantly she took the bag, but her eyes didn’t leave his face. ‘I was rather hoping the next man would be you,’ she told him in the voice she used to seduce, to get her own way.

Frustrated, tired, anxious to get rid of her, he cursed. ‘Didn’t you get the message last time? It will never be me. I’ve never been one for repeats. Once was quite enough.’

‘I bet I can make you change your mind,’ she whispered throatily, moving towards him.

‘And how do you think you can manage that?’

‘Like this.’ She reached up, draping an arm around his neck and pulled his head towards her.

Jim could have resisted but a small part of him wanted to know how he’d react, so he didn’t move away. Her lips brushed his cautiously at first, then more daringly, nibbling on his bottom lip. Something she knew he liked. With her mouth teasing his, her voluptuous breasts crushed against his chest and her hands curled into the hair at the back of his neck, he should have been toast.
